King Krule/King Krule and the Gunk – Collected Tracks

Posted on 06/10/2011

Archy Marshall, the artist formerly known as Zoo Kid, has a new moniker: King Krule. What this means for the seventeen (possibly eigheteen)-year old’s artistic direction is anyone’s guess, but considering ‘The Noose of Jah City’, it’s a pretty logical continuation of his previous work’s soulful, cathartic aesthetic. The track, which will be included on a five-track self-titled EP set for release on November 7th, is beautiful, and lives up to the quality of lovely tracks like ‘Ocean Bed’ and ‘Out Getting Ribs’, both released under his previous recording title. The other four tracks included in this collection have, I think, less to do musically with what the EP will be like, with ‘Alisha’ and ‘Introduction’ highlighting an apparent appreciation for sample-heavy garage/2-step. The tracks are surprisingly good, testament, I guess, to this kid’s talent. ‘Brain’s Dead’ is less significant, although it features Marshall claiming to be an “Odd Future lover” and, uh, the chords to the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ ‘Scar Tissue’ in the outro. Finally, one of these tracks was released by Marshall as King Krule and the Gunk, with the song, ‘Machine Gunk Funk’, functioning as little more than a pun and a Biggie reference in its five, wholly instrumental minutes. I’m pretty sure these are all the songs he’s put out as King Krule (with and without The Gunk), so check ’em out, and we hope to post the EP in its entirety as soon as it’s available.
