“Christian rock”. The phrase is really all you need to get the stankiest of music nerds frothing at the mouth with wrath, and, I gotta say, there’s times when the concept irks me too. Take, for example, the hilariously clichéd picture of LA-based churchgoer dudes Starflyer 59, above. Look how contemplative they are! Sigh, but regardless of your (and my) preconceptions, this band’s Fell in Love at 22 EP is wonderful, four well-written and just darned PRETTY tracks of introspective, brooding shoegaze. Released way back in ’99, this pretty much sets the bar as far as the rest of SF59’s back catalogue goes; it’s unfortunate that their newer stuff is so, like, average and “mature”. Oh well. Check out the title track for an example of a shoegazing ballad done right, and if ‘E.P. Nights” raw emotion doesn’t affect you in some way then don’t talk to me, ever.
